Carmel is located in Clay Township, Hamilton County, immediately north of Indianapolis on highways US 31 and IN 431. I-465 on the southern edge of the city connects four major interstates, more than any other metropolitan area in the state. Distance from Carmel to downtown Indianapolis is approximately 15 miles. Upscale retailers and restaurants are found throughout the city in addition to attractions such as several private and public golf courses, the Carmel Civic Square, the Carmel Symphony Orchestra and Clay Terrace outdoor mall. The Monon Greenway, named for the rails of the Monon Railroad which were laid through Carmel in 1882, is part of one of the Midwest’s most successful rail-trails in terms of popularity, design and economic development.
